Mamma Mia Review
I saw Mamma Mia by Catherine Johnson on Sunday March 1.  I really enjoyed the show, It kept me thinking on what’s going to happen to next. I really did see Mamma Mia from a different point of view seeing little changes from the movie into acting it out which is why i think i enjoyed it so much. The live music from the pit to the actors and even the costumes felt like it was something you would see on tv.
The show starts off with Sophie the bride to be sending letters to three different men. She found these men in her mother diary and one is her potential dad. Her best friends arrive to celebrate her big day, and when they arrive they are just as nosy to read more about these men. They try to understand which man could be her father based off of what sophies mother wrote but all the writing was very similar.  Sophies mother Donna also had her best friends Tanya and Rosie to celebrate the big day and the three of them sung about the stress Donna is under. The moment sophie has been waiting for happand, her three potential dads showed up. They are all asking about Donna because they think the letter was from her but Donna has no idea they are here. As time went on Donna eventually runs into the three men at her hotel bar she questions why they are all here and they all keep sophies secret about inviting them a secret. Donna and The Dominos perform for Sophie’s bachelorette party and it puts everyone in a good mood. But Donna had some men to deal with. Harry wants to take her down the aisle, bill wants to take her away for harry. They all talk about there feeling and what they want with there life. The night goes on and everyone is getting ready for the big day. Sophie starts to get cold feet because she told sky her fiance about why the three men were here and he took it as thats why she wanted a big wedding and shes not marrying him because shes loves him shes marrying him because she wants to figure out stuff for herself. They argue a little and she convinces him that she loves him and wants to marry him for the right reasons. The big day has come around and everyone is filled with joy. Sophie doesn’t know what to do because she wants to know who her dad is. Everyone gets ready for the wedding and when sophie is suppose to say I do she didn’t say that she told her mom why the men were here and she wants to know who her father is. Donna doesn’t know how to respond because she doesn’t know herself. Sam takes this opportunity to tell Donna how he has never stopped loving her and wants to move forward with her. They end up stealing the moment and sam and donna get married.
I really did enjoy the show and the way it was produced was very cool to see a movie I love in a different way. The bright colorful costumes and the set design definitely had a lot to do with the mood of how everything came out.  One thing that really stood out to me though was the love that everyone had for one another weather they were family or not. The love between sophie and and the characters and just the love between characters in sophies life was a really big part of the show and it was an evident in the show.

Right                                                                                                                                        left
Up

Draw a rectangular stage and label the Audience, Center, Down Left and Up Right

What do you think it might it signify when an actor comes closer to the audience rather than moving farther away from the audience?
On a raked stage an actor who is further from the audience is higher than an actor who is closer to the audience. This led to the theatre positions "upstage" and "downstage", meaning, respectively, further from or closer to the audience.

Explain where the audience is in Proscenium Stage vs. a Thrust Stage vs. Theater in the Round?
Proscenium Stage- the audience is arched around the stage
Thrust Stage- the audience is on 3 sides of the square stage
Theater in the Round-audience is completing surrounding the circular stage

What is the most common type of stage?
Proscenium Stage

Where is the orchestra often located in a traditional theater?
Under the stage
What is the challenge of performing in a Theater-in-the Round space?
The actors have to make sure that all the audience equally sees what’s going on and not one section of the audience is always facing the back of the actors
What is the difference between projection and enunciation?
Projection-The placement and delivery of volume, clarity, and distinctness of voice for communicating to an audience.
Enunciation- pronouncing your words clearly
Why are gestures and facial expressions important to actors? What do they do?
They help the audience feel the mood and emotion of the actors so that they better understand the play.
What is the difference between a prop and a set piece and a costume piece?  Give examples of each.
Props- objects actors use in scenes
Set piece- A piece of scenery that stands independently in a scene.
What is the difference between a play and a musical?
play-The stage representation of an action or a story; a dramatic composition.

What is a follow spotlight and give an example of when a director or lighting designer might like to use a follow spot? (2 pts)
It’s a spotlight that follows a specific actor during a scene it could be used when an actor is saying something long/monologuing so the audiences undivided attention is on that specific actor and his/her words
When speaking on stage, even in a stage whisper, actors need to --------- in order for the audience to hear the lines being spoken.

What is the difference between a monologue and dialogue spoken in a scene?
A monologue is where an actor is talking  to himself whereas dialogue is two or more people communication
What is improv? In improv, why should actors never say "no"?
Improv is where you come up with the script on the spot and you should never say any because it leaves the actors in a spot where they cant come up with creative material after someone says no. it cuts off the scene. This is why in improv you always say yes and
If you forget what to say while rehearsing scenes, you say “line,” and the stage manager, director, or whoever is on a book will prompt you. During an actual performance, what should you do?
You should stay calm, try to remember your last lines exemphfi ease
What is motivation and why is it important to character development?
motivation-the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.
This is important in character development  because it tells us why we are following a story at a certain point in time

refers to the “who, where, what, when, why, and how”
What words are usually written in italics in a script and refer to blocking, emotion, or other elements besides lines?
Stage directions
Why might a director ask actors to consider and/or invent a backstory for their characters?
So that the actors can “Be” the character and produce real emotions based on the character
In order to be best seen by the audience, a director may ask actors to alter the way they are standing or positioned by asking them to --------------------.

What pace should actors generally use when speaking lines (except under special circumstances)?
Medium pace speaking, comedy usually are faster paced
What is a common problem that inexperienced actors have regarding the pacing/tempo of lines?
They usually pick up the pace and talk too fast
How are costumes used in creating character? Use a specific example of a character you have seen and how costumes were used to communicate something about the role to the audience.
The usually personify the charter- ex. An outgoing charter would probably wear very colorful colors and wacky clothes

What is blocking? Where should blocking get recorded (written down) while rehearsing?
Blocking is the precise staging of actors to facilitate the performance of a play, ballet, film or opera.
Some plays require actors to contribute some original lines, often as filler. What is this called when actors put in original lines not written in their scripts?
improv/ ad lib
Reaction is just as important as delivering lines. Why?
It helps the audience know what to react to when a scene is confusing
Where are the wings and the backstage on a proscenium type of stage?
Behind the curtains
What is a curtain and a cyclorama in a traditional stage? Why don't we have those in the Black Box?
It blocks parts of the stage during transition scenes or to change the size of the stage. Black boxes don’t have curtains because they are meant to be reconstructed so you can use other things in place of a curtain
What is a prologue and an epilogue in a play?
prologue-a separate introductory section of a literary or musical work\
epilogue-a section or speech at the end of a book or play that serves as a comment on or a conclusion to what has happened.

  • WHAT TIME IS IT? ...
  • WHERE AM I? ...
  • WHAT SURROUNDS ME? ...
  • WHAT ARE THE GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES? ...
  • WHAT IS MY RELATIONSHIP? ...

in class writing

A blue background with big water drops dropping out of the sky. Some  seem huge but others seem so tiny. A water drop is like a container that wraps an island. The island is surrounded by lots of water, even part of the island is in the water.  Green forests, flowery hills, small white houses with red roofs rest on the island. Apple trees that fill the woods, flowers that cover the grass, many houses next to one another that look like palaces.
A man who calls himself a prince, lives alone on this island.  I mean who wouldn't call them self a prince if they are all alone. This prince built himself a huge palace right next to the woods. One day the prince felt very lonely, and tired of being bored all the time. He went to take an adventure to explore the edge of the world. He started his adventure off by chopping a piece of wood to make a wood boat and a pair of oars. He strove hard to paddle, however, just when he felt that he was about to reach the edge of the world, he gasp in fear. He was going to get destroyed . After all those years of living on a tiny island alone he realized his world was a drop of water. After a long fall, it finally fell to the ground, the boat shattered into a million pieces. He looked up and realized how many similar raindrops were falling out of the sky. In the end he had not escaped the broken fate. Just like people in real life, the destruction of water droplets is like the destruction of peoples dreams, eventually it gets broken into pieces and dropped to the ground

Dark purple walls with flashing yellow stars, a dark blue table with flashing yellow dots. A orange cat that seems to be hungry, and a little orange fish that is swimming around in a fish bowl that looks like a snow globe.
On a sunny Saturday  family gets up to get ready for their  day, the husband starts the coffee and the wife makes pancakes. The kids sit on the couch and fight about who gets to pick the show they watch. A cat that sits on the window sill and takes in the sun. The husband leaves for work while the wife gets the kids ready for camp. The wife starts packing the lunches and the kids go get changed. They grab all there bags and head out the door. The cat that was sitting in the window watches as they pull away. He sits and stares for a little to make sure they don't come back.
He hops off the window sill and starts walking around. He finds a toy and starts playing with it, he's swigging at it and jumping on it till he got tired. He walks to his water bowl where he found that his owners forgot to fill it, so he jumps on the counter trying to find a cup of water left. Just when he found a cup there was nothing left in it so, so he jumps back down and starts walking around, when all of sudden he spelt something fishy. He goes into the little boys room and see a bowl of water sitting on his dresser, he jumps up and sees something moving he dips his head in and starts drinking the water. then he got hungry and loved the smell of fish. There had to be a plan to get the bowl knocked over so he took his paw and pushed the bowl off the dresser. When he looked down he saw a little orange things flopping around on the ground. He jump down right on it and ate it very fast. He then was full and tired so he took a nap on the little boys bed. The kids and husband came walking through the door and the little boy went to his room. All of a sudden the husband heard the little boy from the kitchen scream "THE CAT ATE MY GOLDFISH".
